June Calendar Picture

June 1, 2011

I don’t know the name of this cactus, and I’m not even going to try to find out. My cactus identification skills are limited to Schlumbergera, Rhipsalidopsis, Rhipsalis and Opuntia, and since my opinion of cacti sways between ‘not very interesting’ and ‘nasty prickly things’, that’s unlikely to change.

Anyway, nasty prickly things they may be, but they have pretty flowers:

I took this picture at the little ‘cellar stairs garden’ I discovered last spring. I don’t know if I could put such a prettily-blooming plant outside like that, where everyone could steal it. But then again, it’s a nasty prickly thing, so who would? 😉

Just add one name into your cacti identification list: Echinopsis! I agree, they are beautiful!
    Best regards from Croatia!
