What Are You Doing?

June 17, 2012

I’ve been hand-pollinating my cucumber flowers, because the first female flowers opened while the plant was still inside the kitchen, where the bees can’t get at it. Writing a how-to post for my German blog, I joked that cucumber flowers, being either male or female, are really a lot like humans, and compared hand-pollination to artificial insemination.

I stuck the paintbrush I’d used into the cucumber pot to have it handy the next time I needed it. The next morning I woke up to find this:

Which begs the question: if hand-pollination is like artificial insemination, what was this cucumber plant planning to do?! (Doesn’t it look just like it’s going to pick up the paintbrush to use it?)
