Harvest Monday – February 17, 2014

February 18, 2014

I’m not sure I’m even counting this as a harvest… it was more a case of, “this needs to get out of the way, I need those window boxes to plant new stuff”.

kale, chard

So, some random greens, mostly red kale and some chard. I have no idea what I’ll do with them – I planted the kale mostly because it was pretty, I’ve never actually cooked with it yet.

And I’ve taken the first batch of houseplants in to work, which is I count as a harvest of sorts, too. Which means I have a tiny bit more space in my living room and a tiny bit more money in my wallet.

Kale is my second favorite green – right after spinach. And it does look very pretty. All the kale I have freezing in the garden right now is typical green kale, though one is called blue and does have a tiny bit of blue color in the green.

We actually started to grow this red kale as an ornamental plant at work, but then also started selling it as a vegetable. Mine just never got very large – I was very lazy with the fertilizer last year, which is just not a good thing in a balcony garden.
